Koelnmesse is the third largest trade fair venue in Germany and one of the ten largest in the world, with 11 halls, the Confex conference and exhibition centre, two congress centres and almost 400,000 m² of indoor and outdoor space. Around 44,000 exhibiting companies and 2.5 million visitors pass through it each year (source: koelnmesse.com). Stand construction here is shaped by the hall you are allocated, not by the fair alone.

Headroom and floor load vary widely across the grounds, and they decide what is buildable. Hall 8 clears 15 metres and halls 6, 7 and 9 clear 11 metres, all four rated to 50 kN/m², which is where double decker stands and heavy machinery displays belong. Hall 3.1, by contrast, has 4.75 metres of headroom, so a two storey design is off the table before it is drawn. Knowing which hall your space sits in before the concept stage saves a redesign.

We have built 16 stands at Koelnmesse since 2019, for eight exhibitors across ISM, Anuga FoodTec and DACH+HOLZ International.

Most of that work sits in two places. Confectionery clients at ISM are nearly always in hall 10.2, in stands between 12 and 43 m²: Starsweets has taken the same 20 m² there for three editions running, Helikon Gida 42.75 m² across three. Machinery and materials clients need the taller halls with the 50 kN/m² floors. Emerson Technik went from 138 m² in hall 9 to 170.5 m² in hall 6 over three Anuga FoodTec editions, and Bilka Steel built 100 m² in hall 8 for DACH+HOLZ 2026.

Building in the same halls repeatedly is mostly a logistics advantage. Hall 10.2 has very little room at the unloading doors, and on the first day of build-up, when every exhibitor arrives at once, you can lose hours queuing at the gate or in the yard before there is space to park and unload. We book delivery and collection through eSlot, Koelnmesse’s own time slot system, and where the schedule allows we keep our trucks out of that first morning rush.

We also order waste disposal before build week rather than during it. Rubbish left in the aisle around a stand gets penalised at Koelnmesse, and a container booked in advance is not cheap, but it costs less than the alternative.

Beyond that, every fair at Koelnmesse sets its own technical guidelines, build-up and dismantling windows and approval deadlines, and two storey or suspended structures need sign off before build. We work to the guidelines published for your specific fair and handle the submissions, the logistics slots and the on site coordination, so the schedule is ours to manage rather than yours.
